Most Provence rosé is drunk in the summer after harvest. This is a 2016 from Domaines Ott's seaside estate, which makes it a rare chance to see what a serious coastal rosé does with years in the bottle. Clos Mireille faces the Mediterranean at La Londe-les-Maures. Its vines grow in clay and schist with no limestone at all, and the producer credits the wine's character to sea spray, dry air coming down from the hills and plenty of sun. Here's a bit of trivia: Clos Mireille made only white wine until 2004, and the rosé vines went in after that, so this bottle comes from the early years of its rosé story. Marcel Ott, an agricultural engineer from Alsace, bought the property in the 1930s. The estate house was built by Benedictine monks in the 18th century. The house builds this cuvée on Grenache and Cinsault every year, adding Syrah and/or Rolle depending on the vintage. This one is for the curious drinker, not the poolside crowd, so open it with dinner and give it a proper wine glass.

More about Domaines Ott

Domaines Ott did as much as anyone to turn Provence rosé from a holiday souvenir into a serious wine, and its curvy, amphora-inspired bottle, a family design, is still one of the most recognizable shapes on any wine list.

Marcel Ott, an agricultural engineer from Alsace, came south to Provence around the turn of the 20th century, when phylloxera had made vineyard land cheap, and bought Château de Selle, in the hills at Taradeau, in 1912. In the 1930s he added Clos Mireille, on the coast at La Londe-les-Maures near the Fort de Brégançon, and in 1956 Château Romassan in Bandol. The Champagne house Louis Roederer bought the business in 2004, and members of the Ott family have stayed at the helm.

Each estate has its own character. Château de Selle sits inland on clay and limestone; Clos Mireille's vines grow on schist within reach of the sea spray, and for decades it made only white wine; at Romassan, Bandol's Mourvèdre gives the rosé more weight and spice. The grapes are hand-picked and gently pressed, and the estates are now certified organic. Expect pale, dry, structured rosés with the depth and length of a good white wine, made for the table as much as the terrace.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Bouillabaisse with rouille, grilled sardines or red mullet, salade niçoise, socca with olive tapenade, or a roast chicken with herbes de Provence.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Côtes de Provence rosé profile: pale salmon-pink, with red berries, white peach and citrus peel over a light herbal edge. Grenache and Cinsault typically give a supple, medium-light body, and a coastal site like this one usually adds a salty, mineral streak to the fresh acidity. The finish should be dry and clean.
