Quartz is exactly what it sounds like: this Chenas comes from granite soils shot through with bands of quartz, and that crystal-laced rock gives the wine a mineral lift that keeps it expressive without ever turning heavy. The estate is a partnership between Beaujolais stalwart Dominique Piron and the Lameloise restaurant family, working tiny Chenas, the smallest of the ten crus. The old Gamay vines here produce a firm, structured red built for the table and the cellar. This is a mature back-vintage bottle from a private collection, now over a decade old and showing the savory, earthy depth that good cru Beaujolais develops with time.
