Dönnhoff sums up this dry Riesling in two words: "unmistakably Felsenberg." That's the reason to buy it, because few vineyards announce themselves in the glass like this one. The fruit comes from the best steep parcels around the Felsentürmchen, the "small rock tower" in the middle of the Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg. Here 25- to 50-year-old vines grow in red volcanic hard rock, porphyry and melaphyr, and the little tower is the symbol on the label. The grapes are selectively hand-picked, then the wine ferments and matures in stainless steel and classic oak casks. It rests at least six months on its full lees and two more on its fine lees, a step the Dönnhoffs credit for the wine's long life. Grosses Gewächs is a VDP classification rather than one written into German wine law, and this bottling shows the house at its most site-focused. The 2025 won't leave the estate before September 2026, so plan on waiting a while.

More about Donnhoff

If you love Riesling, you know the name Dönnhoff. If you don't love Riesling-- yet-- Dönnhoff will teach you why the grape inspires such passion.

Dönnhoff is the greatest estate in the Nahe and one of the best in all of Germany. The family has had four generations to dive deep into their terroir and perfect their winemaking. Their top wines are long-lived and collectible.

That terroir is, of course, key. The Nahe has the most varied soils (including, especially, different kinds of volcanic soil) of any German region, as well as a climate that ranges from very cold high-elevation sites to pockets of Mediterranean warmth. This gives Dönnhoff a painter’s palette of flavors and textures from which to craft a perfect wine.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pan-roasted halibut with beurre blanc, roast chicken with tarragon, smoked trout with horseradish cream, or Alsatian tarte flambée.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic profile of dry Nahe Riesling from volcanic soil: ripe peach, citrus and yellow apple with a smoky, stony minerality. Fermentation in steel and traditional oak casks plus long lees ageing typically give a fuller, textured body, with ripe, fine acidity that stays supple rather than sharp, and a long, powerful dry finish.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
