Just 8.5% alcohol, from a vineyard that turns out first-class Spätlesen year after year. This is the off-dry Riesling Dönnhoff fans in more than 40 countries keep coming back to. Dönnhoff is the benchmark of the Nahe, and Norheimer Kirschheck, right next door to the Dellchen, is one of its most distinctive sites. It's a steep, pure south-facing slope of grey clay slate mixed with red Rotliegend sandstone, in the part of Norheim that holds the Nahe's oldest documented vineyards. The middle of the hill is now classified by the VDP as a Grosse Lage, Germany's version of grand cru. The name nods to the wild cherries (Kirsche) that once grew here, and a few cherry trees still stand among the vines. For the 2025, grapes from vines 20 to 55 years old were picked selectively by hand, then fermented and matured in stainless steel. Helmut Dönnhoff and his son Cornelius believe winemaking can't create quality, only keep what the vineyard already gives, and a light, lightly sweet Spätlese like this is that idea in practice. Serve well chilled.

More about Donnhoff

If you love Riesling, you know the name Dönnhoff. If you don't love Riesling-- yet-- Dönnhoff will teach you why the grape inspires such passion.

Dönnhoff is the greatest estate in the Nahe and one of the best in all of Germany. The family has had four generations to dive deep into their terroir and perfect their winemaking. Their top wines are long-lived and collectible.

That terroir is, of course, key. The Nahe has the most varied soils (including, especially, different kinds of volcanic soil) of any German region, as well as a climate that ranges from very cold high-elevation sites to pockets of Mediterranean warmth. This gives Dönnhoff a painter’s palette of flavors and textures from which to craft a perfect wine.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Spicy Thai larb or green papaya salad, Sichuan dan dan noodles, glazed pork belly, smoked trout with horseradish cream, or a wedge of blue cheese.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Nahe Spätlese profile: ripe peach, apple and citrus with a smoky, slate-driven minerality and perhaps a hint of red cherry. Light-bodied and lightly sweet, with steel-fermented freshness and bright, racy acidity that keeps the sweetness in check, it typically finishes long, juicy and clean. Think of a Mosel Spätlese with a little more fruit.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
