Dönnhoff's dry Riesling from the steep slope directly above the winery is the clearest way to taste what slate does to Nahe Riesling, and you don't need a grand cru budget to do it. The name tells you what's underneath: Tonschiefer is German for clay slate, and the vines grow mostly in the upper part of the Oberhäuser Leistenberg, on dark, ancient carbon slate that soaks up the day's heat and holds onto it. The 2025 comes from vines 25 to 45 years old. It was picked selectively by hand, then raised partly in stainless steel and partly in large traditional oak casks, so nothing gets between the rock and your glass. At 12% alcohol it's built for finesse rather than power. The family calls it expressive but never loud. Cornelius Dönnhoff puts special weight on wines like this because they're the ones most people taste first, and you can tell.

More about Donnhoff

If you love Riesling, you know the name Dönnhoff. If you don't love Riesling-- yet-- Dönnhoff will teach you why the grape inspires such passion.

Dönnhoff is the greatest estate in the Nahe and one of the best in all of Germany. The family has had four generations to dive deep into their terroir and perfect their winemaking. Their top wines are long-lived and collectible.

That terroir is, of course, key. The Nahe has the most varied soils (including, especially, different kinds of volcanic soil) of any German region, as well as a climate that ranges from very cold high-elevation sites to pockets of Mediterranean warmth. This gives Dönnhoff a painter’s palette of flavors and textures from which to craft a perfect wine.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pan-fried trout with brown butter and almonds; raw oysters; Vietnamese summer rolls with herbs and nuoc cham; chicken or pork schnitzel with lemon; sashimi.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic profile of dry, slate-grown Nahe Riesling: lime, green apple and white peach, with a smoky, stony minerality. Typically light to medium-bodied and fine-boned, with racy, precise acidity, while the large traditional casks add texture rather than woodiness. It should finish dry, crisp and long, with a salty, mineral edge.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
