A volcanic Aglianico with two decades of bottle age — and still going strong. Elena Fucci's Titolo comes from six hectares planted at 600 meters on the slopes of Mount Vulture, the extinct volcano whose pozzolanic soils give Basilicata's Aglianico its unmistakable smoky-mineral spine. Elena took over her grandfather Generoso's vineyard in 2000 and built the estate around a single bottling. The 2004, her first sizeable commercial release, was made from one of the great early-century Vulture vintages. Twenty-one years on, the chewy black-fruited tannins have softened into something darkly polished — leather, ash, dried Mediterranean herbs, balsamic — and the volcanic minerality holds the whole thing taut. A mature wine drinking right in its window.

"The cool-vintage 2004 Aglianico del Vulture Titolo blends mentholated herbs and dried strawberries with enriching notes of brown spice and fig. This is cool-toned and classic, with fresh acidity and a tinge of minerality up front, giving way to polished red berry fruits that flow under an air of rosy inner florals. The 2004 still displays a youthful tension, the result of zesty acidity rather than tannins. A pleasantly crunchy sensation of tart cranberry hangs around on the close. This was Fucci's first vintage after finishing her oenology degree at the University of Pisa. It shows the style she has refined over the last 20 years, maturing in a combination of tonneaux and 200-liter barriques." —Eric Guido

"The 2004 Aglianico del Vulture Titolo is a wine of amazing beauty. Its personality is timid and understated initially, but its true spirit comes alive with confident and articulate tones as the wine slowly opens in the glass. Nothing is obvious about the 2004 Titolo. It is sleek and flirtatious, revealing what it wants to show one delicate aroma at a time. Dried fruit, cassis, bright berry, earthy tones, crushed mineral and exotic spice peel off layer by layer. The wine shows an inky dark, garnet color with lively highlights of ruby and crimson. Its concentration is equally bold and dense with a perfect, although seemingly oxymoronic weightless determination that underlines its pedigree and elegance. In the mouth, Titolo exhibits firm, but polished and fine tannins that add to the overall textural richness. This vintage shows all the qualities for long aging." —Monica Larner

More about Elena Fucci

A third-generation grape grower, Elena Fucci broke with family tradition when she decided to vinify those grapes into her own cuvée. Elena makes just one wine, but she believes that one bottling represents everything that Aglianico can be.

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Decant gently and pour alongside slow-braised lamb shoulder, wild mushroom risotto with black truffle shavings, or a rare grilled ribeye finished with rosemary and sea salt. The wine's secondary herb and leather notes also love hard sheep's milk cheeses.

Tasting Profile

Mature, savory, structured. Dried black cherry, leather, balsamic, smoked herbs, and licorice over a backbone of volcanic minerality. Tannins fully resolved; finish long, dark, and ashy. Old-world Aglianico at its evolved best.
