Elio Grasso was the first in his family to vinify the grapes his predecessors had sold in bulk, establishing his estate in Monforte d'Alba in 1978. His son Gianluca now works alongside him, farming eighteen hectares within the Barolo UNESCO World Heritage site. The Gavarini Vigna Chiniera comes from south-facing slopes at three hundred fifty to four hundred meters elevation on limestone-based soil—Grasso's more traditional expression, aged in twenty-five-hectoliter Slavonian oak botti rather than French barriques. The warm 2007 vintage delivered radiant, intensely perfumed Barolo with textural richness and gorgeous length—seductive and generous yet never heavy. Expect ripe cherry, leather, pine resin, and violet character with fine, granular tannins and fresh supporting acidity. Now entering its prime at roughly seventeen years old, this is Monforte d'Alba at its most approachable and expressive.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"Good medium red. Downright Burgundian nose offers redcurrant, strawberry, menthol, crushed stone and flowers; vibrant yet reticent. Sweet, broad and fine-grained, with a light touch to the slightly imploded flavors of plum, mocha, earth and spices. Finishes impressively broad, with a juicy quality and ripe dusty tannins. Give this four or five years in the cellar." —Stephen Tanzer

Wine Spectator

92 points

"This is elegant, offering floral, raspberry, cherry and mineral aromas and flavors. Light-weight and intense, with fine harmony and a lingering finish."

More about Elio Grasso

Elio Grasso worked in a Turin bank before his winemaking grandfather's death pulled him back to his roots in Monforte d'Alba. Since 1978, he's tended 44 acres of vineyards with meticulous care, producing just 90,000 bottles a year of single-vineyard Barolo cuvées that speak directly to the character of their terroir. His son Gianluca carries the work forward now.
