Elio Grasso is one of Monforte d'Alba's most celebrated traditional Barolo houses, and Ginestra Casa Mate is the family's flagship cru: a south-facing block of calcareous-clay marl inside the famed Ginestra MGA. Founded in 1978 by Elio and now in the hands of son Gianluca, the estate works in the patient classical mold, with long macerations and extended aging in large neutral oak. 2008 is a structured, classical Piedmont vintage, the kind of year that needed a decade or two to fully reveal itself. Seventeen years on, this Barolo is in mid-maturity: the famously firm Monforte tannins have softened toward velvet, the perfume has bloomed, and there is still another decade of upside in the bottle.

"One of the truly epic, reference-point wines of the year, the 2008 Barolo Ginestra Vigna Casa Matè lifts from the glass with the classic scents of Ginestra. Pine, menthol, smoke, anise, new leather and violets are just the prelude as the 2008 opens up. Dark, mysterious and totally seductive, the 2008 is simply magnificent. Grasso is one of the hottest growers in Piedmont today. This is a great example of the level of quality that is the norm at this small, family-run estate." —Antonio Galloni

"So graceful and harmonious, yet well-structured, with a lush texture covering the acidity and tannins. That provides the ideal foil for this red's cherry, plum, spice and tobacco flavors. Finishes long, with freshness and a mineral accent. Best from 2014 through 2027."

More about Elio Grasso

Elio Grasso worked in a Turin bank before his winemaking grandfather's death pulled him back to his roots in Monforte d'Alba. Since 1978, he's tended 44 acres of vineyards with meticulous care, producing just 90,000 bottles a year of single-vineyard Barolo cuvées that speak directly to the character of their terroir. His son Gianluca carries the work forward now.

Brasato al Barolo, agnolotti del plin, wild boar ragu, roast guinea hen with truffle, or aged Castelmagno. Built for the great slow-cooked classics of Piemonte.

Dried rose, sweet tobacco, dark cherry, tar, leather, and a savory note of crushed truffle. Firm but resolving tannins, bright acidity, and a long, mineral finish. A classical Monforte Barolo entering its long plateau of drinkability.
