Elio Grasso is one of Monforte d'Alba's most beloved traditional Barolo houses, founded in 1978 and run today by Elio's son Gianluca. Ginestra Casa Maté is the estate's south-facing block inside the celebrated Ginestra cru, on calcareous-clay marl at 300 to 350 meters. Winemaking is as classical as it gets: malolactic in stainless, then two years of patient aging in 25-hectoliter Slavonian botte, no new wood, no makeup. The 2010 vintage is widely considered one of the greatest Piedmont years of the modern era, structured and pure and built for the long haul. Fifteen years on this wine is finally entering its drinking window, layered and silken, with the muscle to coast for another twenty years.

Antonio Galloni

"Dark red cherries, plums, smoke, tar, menthol and licorice all take shape in the 2010 Barolo Ginestra Vigna Casa Matè. Today the 2010 is painfully young and less expressive than the Gavarini, but equally promising. A generous, resonant wine, the 2010 blossoms in all directions with seemingly endless layers of dark, balsamic-inflected fruit. Today, the Casa Matè is closed and shut down, but it has all the qualities to develop into a spectacular Barolo. The future is bright, especially for readers who can be patient." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"The 2010 Barolo Ginestra Casa Mate is a more muscular and layered expression with a softer quality of fruit and a good amount of power and muscle at the back. Its aromatic delivery is constant and steady with an ever-changing array of red fruit, dark spice, cola and anisette. The tannins are particularly well defined and silky. Drink: 2018-2038." —Monica Larner

"Monforte d’Alba. A little bluer than the Gavarini. Complex mulchy nose with the lovely high-toned notes that distinguish a fine Barolo. Lots of punch and intensity. Dry finish but really fresh and complex with autumn leaves on the palate."

"Leather, tar and spice notes trump the dried cherry and berry flavors in this vivid Barolo. There's sweetness midpalate, with dusty, mouthcoating tannins lining the finish. Balanced, but needs time."

Kerin O'Keefe

"This is a hallmark Barolo of impressive structure and balance. It offers beguiling Nebbiolo scents of rose, black cherry, leather, sweet spices, licorice and balsamic notes with a just a whiff of tar that all carry over to the palate. A wine with power and finesse, this will age and continue to develop for decades. Drink 2020-2045." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Elio Grasso

Elio Grasso worked in a Turin bank before his winemaking grandfather's death pulled him back to his roots in Monforte d'Alba. Since 1978, he's tended 44 acres of vineyards with meticulous care, producing just 90,000 bottles a year of single-vineyard Barolo cuvées that speak directly to the character of their terroir. His son Gianluca carries the work forward now.

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo, osso buco, agnolotti del plin with butter and sage, white truffle pasta, or a tagliata of aged beef. Classic Piemontese cooking is the natural partner.

Tasting Profile

Layered aromas of dried rose, sour cherry, tar, anise, cola, and leather. The palate is silky but muscular, with fine-grained tannins still asserting themselves and a current of dark spice running through a long, mineral finish. Drink now through 2040-plus.
