Ginestra is one of the handful of Barolo vineyards people argue about in the same breath as Cannubi and Brunate — a steep amphitheater in Monforte d'Alba that turns out some of the most powerful Nebbiolo in the Langhe. Casa Maté is Elio Grasso's parcel within it, and the wine has always been the muscular counterpart to the estate's more perfumed Gavarini Chiniera: deeper, darker, more tannic, built on a bigger frame. Gianluca Grasso keeps the winemaking traditional — long ageing in large Slavonian casks, no new-oak makeup — so what you taste is the site doing the talking. In 2019, a vintage that delivered structure and freshness in equal measure, that means dark cherry and plum, licorice, tar, dried herbs and a tannic spine you could build a house on. This is a Barolo for the patient: give it years, or give it a long decant and a very good piece of meat.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2019 Barolo Ginestra Casa Matè is a classy, elegant wine. Beams of tannin and bright acids give the 2019 its vertical feel. This classically built, austere young Barolo is going to need time to be at its best. Dark-toned fruit, spice, leather, licorice and a host of balsamic-infused notes build into the potent finish. This has potential to grow." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"Very different from the Gavarini Chiniera, the 2019 Barolo Ginestra Casa Maté shows more bite, structure and a bigger tannic impact. Fruit was harvested a bit earlier, but healthy grape skins allowed for 52 days of maceration. This wine shows beautiful intensity and fullness with dark fruit, earth, hazelnut and dark plum. Surrounded by forests, the greenery gives balance to this wine by moderating temperatures. In fact, this site saw up to 10 degrees Celsius drops in diurnal temperatures, leading to thick skins and ideal phenolic ripeness." —Monica Larner

Wine Spectator

96 points

"Rich, with predominant black cherry, blackberry and violet flavors and subtle red fruit and flower accents. Shows a base of nervy tannins and lively acidity, which keep this well-defined, while accents of eucalyptus, iron, tar and spices add depth. Youthful, balanced and long on the aftertaste. Best from 2027 through 2047."

More about Elio Grasso

Elio Grasso worked in a Turin bank before his winemaking grandfather's death pulled him back to his roots in Monforte d'Alba. Since 1978, he's tended 44 acres of vineyards with meticulous care, producing just 90,000 bottles a year of single-vineyard Barolo cuvées that speak directly to the character of their terroir. His son Gianluca carries the work forward now.
