The 2013 cool, precision-focused vintage suits this limestone-driven vineyard perfectly. Elio Grasso's Ginestra Casa Maté from this year shows the aromatic purity and mineral salinity that make great Barolo. The vineyard's position on predominantly limestone soils with clay patches channels energy into phenolic ripeness rather than mere sugar. A wine that rewards patience, building complexity over 15-20 years in the cellar. Classic Monforte structure.

Antonio Galloni

"Grasso's 2013 Barolo Ginestra Casa Matè is powerful, deep and tightly wound, with a level of translucent energy that is alluring. Deceptively medium in body, the 2013 packs a real punch. The Casa Matè has also closed down considerably since I last tasted it. Not that that should be a problem, as the 2013 really needs a number of years to be at its very best." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

96 points

"The 2013 Barolo Ginestra Casa Maté does a great job of portraying its vineyard characteristics. This single vineyard is located at higher altitudes with thicker clay soils. This combination helps to build the wine's intensity, structure and muscle. It undergoes 45 days of submerged cap fermentation. Dark cherry and blackberry open the bouquet. These aromas are followed by spice, smoke, iron and crushed mineral. The robust nature of those aromas makes for a beautiful contrast to the fine, silky and more delicate (relatively speaking) nature of the mouthfeel." —Monica Larner

"A beefy red, with grip and power framing the licorice, cherry, tar and tobacco flavors. Complex and fresh, this has everything in the right proportion, showing fine balance on the lingering aftertaste. Forget about this for eight years. Best from 2022 through 2038."

More about Elio Grasso

Elio Grasso worked in a Turin bank before his winemaking grandfather's death pulled him back to his roots in Monforte d'Alba. Since 1978, he's tended 44 acres of vineyards with meticulous care, producing just 90,000 bottles a year of single-vineyard Barolo cuvées that speak directly to the character of their terroir. His son Gianluca carries the work forward now.
