High-elevation Novello Barolo from the late Elvio Cogno's legacy estate, now in its drinking window. Elvio — long the winemaker at Marcarini before founding his own estate in 1990 — settled in Novello, the southernmost Barolo village, where the Ravera cru climbs to cool, breezy altitudes that yield Barolo of high-toned aromatics and serious structure. Son-in-law Valter Fissore runs things today, with a modern-traditional approach that pairs long maceration with neutral botti aging. The 2009 was a warm, generous vintage, and at sixteen years on, this Ravera has shed its primary youth — red cherry, rose, mineral lift, and a hint of Novello's distinctive saline herbal edge. Drinking beautifully now, with years of cellar life ahead.

Antonio Galloni

"Good medium red. Subtle aromas of raspberry liqueur, mocha and burnished oak. Suave and sweet, with a seamless texture to the flavors of raspberry and truffle lifted by flowers. A shapely, refined midweight with lovely perfumed length. In a rather delicate style for Ravera. (Incidentally, I recently retasted the 2008 Ravera, which I rated 91+? in IWC 159, and it showed more aromatic complexity than the 2009 and a somewhat cooler character and lighter touch." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

91 points

"Cogno’s 2009 Barolo Ravera shows a steady delivery of black fruit, leather, anise, black cherry, licorice and white truffle. Like the Barolo Cascina Nuova the aromas are not quite as focused as they could be. The wine shows a solid grip in the mouth with tightly woven tannins folded within its texture." —Monica Larner

Wine Spectator

93 points

"Cherry, sandalwood, spice and licorice flavors are the main themes in this rich, chewy red. Complex and long, turning lean as the tannins maintain grip on the finish, with lingering spice and savory underbrush accents. A hint of truffle emerges with air. Best from 2016 through 2029."

More about Elvio Cogno

We have been excited about Cogno's wines for many years. With the most recent of vintages, Elvio Cogno has reached the pinnacle of greatness. The domaine can now join a small handful of producers in Barolo that we can truly call elite.

This was inevitable. Cogno was founded by Elvio Cogno in 1990 after he left Marcarini, where he earned a reputation as one of the greatest wine-makers in Piedmont. Since then, he (together with his daughter Nadia and her husband, Valter Fissore) has been making very traditional-style Barolos in the village of Novello, and especially its top Cru, Ravera.

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Tajarin with butter and white truffle, braised lamb shoulder, mushroom risotto, or aged Bra Duro. The perfumed style also handles game birds and herb-crusted pork loin.

Tasting Profile

Perfumed and structured: red cherry, dried rose, crushed mineral, sweet pipe tobacco, and a saline herbal lift. Tannins still firm but ripe, acidity bright, the finish long and savory-mineral. Classical Novello energy.
