Ravera is the flagship cru of Novello, the southernmost Barolo village — a high-elevation hill of calcareous-clay soils that climbs to roughly 400 meters and gives Nebbiolo a distinctive cool-climate signature: lifted aromatics, vibrant acidity, structured tannins. Elvio Cogno founded his estate at the top of this hill in 1990, and the family (now run by son-in-law Valter Fissore and daughter Nadia) holds the largest position in Ravera by far. The 2011 was a warm, more forward Piedmont vintage, which has worked in this wine's favor — fourteen years on, the high-altitude freshness is keeping the generosity in check. Mid-window drinking, with the next decade still in front of it.

"The 2011 Barolo Ravera emerges from the oldest vines on the property. Dark cherry, plum, spice, new leather and lavender swirl around the glass in a resonant, generous Barolo that captures the generosity of the year as seen through the lens of Ravera. In this vintage, the Ravera is an especially weightless and simply impeccable in its overall balance. Hints of leather, sweet spices add nuance on the soft yet energetic finish. There is so much to like here." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"The 2011 Barolo Ravera does a terrific job of portraying the soft and rich side of the vintage with a slightly more accessible style. The wine opens to dark extraction and bright cherry flavors with spice, tobacco, black truffle, pressed rose petal and licorice. It shows a youthful, vibrant personality with a pristine varietal voice. If you are looking for an opulent, caressing Barolo, this wine fits the bill. The Ravera vineyard is planted to 50-year-old vines that hold up very nicely in warm vintages such as 2011. It has the natural structure and heft necessary for longer aging." —Monica Larner

"Novello. Mid crimson. Unusually gamey nose – rather appealing! Soft and sweet on the palate with very fine tannins on the end. Nicely integrated. Very refreshing."

Wine Spectator

"A clean, focused style, this red shows warmth, balance, structure and complexity, offering classic rose, cherry, tar and tobacco aromas and flavors. with plenty of fruit. Features a fine, intense aftertaste of cherry, mineral and tobacco. Best from 2019 through 2033."

Kerin O'Keefe

"This is another impressive effort from Cogno, offering aromas of ripe dark-skinned fruit, fragrant flower, underbrush and menthol. The firm, precise palate offers dried black cherry, cinnamon, anise, clove, cocoa and mineral set against a tannic backbone and brisk acidity. Give this time to develop even more complexity. Drink 2019–2031." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Elvio Cogno

We have been excited about Cogno's wines for many years. With the most recent of vintages, Elvio Cogno has reached the pinnacle of greatness. The domaine can now join a small handful of producers in Barolo that we can truly call elite.

This was inevitable. Cogno was founded by Elvio Cogno in 1990 after he left Marcarini, where he earned a reputation as one of the greatest wine-makers in Piedmont. Since then, he (together with his daughter Nadia and her husband, Valter Fissore) has been making very traditional-style Barolos in the village of Novello, and especially its top Cru, Ravera.

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Tajarin with butter and sage, brasato di vitello, or a porcini-and-thyme risotto. The cool-climate lift handles slightly lighter dishes than typical Barolo — even a roast guinea hen works.

Tasting Profile

Wild strawberry, red cherry, dried rose, anise, and crushed stone. Lifted and aromatic on the nose, with vibrant acidity, fine-grained tannins, and a long, mineral, distinctly cool-toned finish.
