Elvio Cogno is the producer who put Novello on the Barolo map, farming the high, blue-marl hillsides of the Ravera cru when almost no one else bothered. This is their flagship Ravera, from a vineyard that starts at 380 meters and ripens up to ten days later than the famous sites down the hill, which buys it freshness and a steely, linear spine. The 2013 was a classic, structured Barolo vintage, so this bottle was built for the long haul. At a decade-plus it is moving into its mature stride but still has plenty of road ahead, and a couple of hours in a decanter does it favors.

More about Elvio Cogno

We have been excited about Cogno's wines for many years. With the most recent of vintages, Elvio Cogno has reached the pinnacle of greatness. The domaine can now join a small handful of producers in Barolo that we can truly call elite.

This was inevitable. Cogno was founded by Elvio Cogno in 1990 after he left Marcarini, where he earned a reputation as one of the greatest wine-makers in Piedmont. Since then, he (together with his daughter Nadia and her husband, Valter Fissore) has been making very traditional-style Barolos in the village of Novello, and especially its top Cru, Ravera.
