This is the wine at the center of Emmanuel Brochet's tiny world — the main cuvée, drawn from the single 2.5-hectare slope in Villers-aux-Noeuds that is his entire holding, and one of the most sought-after grower Champagnes anyone makes today. Mont Benoit is one hill: chalk with a layer of silt and a layer of clay over it, planted in equal thirds to Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir, with the oldest vines up top from 1962 and the youngest below from 1984. Brochet is a first-generation grower — he started in 1997, released his first label in 2002, and got organic certification in 2011 after roughly a decade of farming without chemicals — and he does nearly all the work himself, by hand. In the cellar it's a traditional vertical press, barely any sulfur, and strictly natural fermentations, including the second one in the bottle, which he coaxes along with ambient yeasts he selected himself. The R22 on the label is the harvest code, but this is a non-vintage bottling because Le Mont Benoit is always an assemblage of two years. Everything here is Extra Brut, and there's only ever 7,000 to 8,000 bottles of everything combined — so this is a buy-it-when-you-see-it proposition.

More about

Emmanuel became a first-generation Champagne grower in 1997, releasing his first label in 2002. His 2.5 hectares sit on a slope in Villers-Aux-Nœuds with vines ranging from 1962 to 1984 plantings. He works entirely by hand, certified organic since 2011, and makes only Extra-Brut—around 7,000 to 8,000 bottles a year. These are among the most sought-after grower Champagnes today.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Oysters on the half shell, fried chicken, gougères, roast chicken with mushrooms, aged Comté, or a salt-crusted whole fish.

Tasting Profile

Dry and quite savory, with orchard fruit — apple, pear — alongside bread dough, toasted nuts and a chalky, almost saline edge. Medium-bodied, firm acidity, fine bubbles, and a long, dry finish.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
