This is Nero d'Avola like almost no other: own-rooted, pre-phylloxera vines high in Sicily's central hills, the ancestral heart of Fabio Sireci's Feudo Montoni estate. Vrucara comes from a single organically farmed parcel of clay and sand, fermented in cement with native yeasts and given a long, patient rest before release. Where the 2019 leans structured and firm, the 2020 is the plusher, rounder sibling, all velvet and ripe red fruit with soft, well-knit tannins. It's the more immediately generous of the two, drinking beautifully now while still holding plenty in reserve. A serious, saline, deeply Sicilian red that rewards curiosity.

"A sheen of spicy oak and sweet lavender gives way to crushed wild blueberries and hints of confectionery spice as the 2020 Vrucara smolders up from the glass. This is elegant and polished in feel. Ripe red and blue fruits swirl across a stream of cooling acidity as a coating of fine-grained tannins saturates the palate toward the close. It finishes structured and long with a deep swath of blackberries and mocha. The 2020 is still incredibly young, but it’s quite complex. It will require time to integrate its oak and come fully into balance." —Eric Guido

"Tasted from magnum, the organic Feudo Montoni 2020 Sicilia Nero d'Avola Vrucara is a wine that vintner Fabio Sireci has been working to improve for many years. It remains one of the best expressions of the grape on the market today. Since the 2017 vintage, it has included 15% stems. The "progetto raspi" is something that was passed down from Fabio's father, Elio. The trick is to avoid the bitterness of the stems, something Fabio does by sun-drying the fruit on cane mats as if it were an appassimento. The wine ages in cement for 40 months. The fruit comes from a 2.2-hectare site with clay and sand at 500 meters in elevation." —Monica Larner

"A rich and juicy note of Amarena cherry is underscored by fragrant accents of tar, mountain herbs, cocoa powder and red licorice. The detailed profile rides the lightly plush and pleasing texture, framed by well-integrated, creamy-edged tannins. Drink now through 2034."

"The warm nose balances the sweetness of cherry cola and blood orange with the savoriness of dirt and mixed herbs. On the palate, the blood orange and herb notes star, as emergent flavors of red plum, strawberry and black pepper intensify that interplay. Smooth, firm tannins create a streamlined yet deep feel." —Danielle Callegari

More about Feudo Montoni

Feudo Montoni sits isolated on Sicily's high terrain, so isolated that phylloxera never arrived. The vines are own-rooted and some are hundreds of years old. Massal selection cuttings come only from their own vineyards. The terroir—high altitude, cold nights, sandy soils, ancient roots—gives their Nero d'Avola and whites real freshness, elegance, and minerality.
