Fall Session: October-November 2024

Tuesday, October 29: The New Face of Fortified (taught by Annie Edgerton, DWSET, CS, CSW)

Difficulty level: Wine 101
Fortified wine has been a significant part of vino-history since the 18th century. In fact, the practice of adding brandy to stabilize wine is what made it possible to transport different wines around the globe in the first place! But for the last couple of generations, fortified wine has felt stuffy and inaccessible to American drinkers.

However, we are starting to see a resurgence: fortified wines are appearing in cocktails, new regions are playing with old styles, and there are whispers the category might be the savior of wine in a world faced with global warming. Join Annie Edgerton, DWSET, as she takes you on a journey of the past, present, and future of fortified wines, and the incredible array of their styles. We’ll taste Sherry, Port, Madeira, and more, making converts out of the skeptics, and fanatics out of the believers.

Taught by Flatiron's own Annie Edgerton, this class will begin at 6:00pm on Tuesday, October 29 and run for approximately 90 minutes. Products tasted in class will be available for purchase with a discount available to attendees only. Seating is limited. Get tickets now.

Tuesday, November 5: Introducing the Rhône Valley (taught by Annie Edgerton, DWSET, CS, CSW)

Difficulty level: Wine 101
France’s Rhône Valley is a marvel. The Northern and Southern regions are fascinatingly different from one another, in geography and the wines they produce, and yet they share an enchanting wildness. The Rhône has been a viticultural hotspot for over 2,000 years and there are 21 authorized grape varieties, yet some appellations use only a single one. Bordeaux may be for the statesman, Burgundy for the intellectual, but the Rhône is for the passionate adventurer. Annie Edgerton, DWSET, will take you on a journey through the breathtaking region, its history, varieties, and styles, sampling five incredibly diverse wines. Will she be able to corral everything the Rhône has to offer into one class? She’s ready to try!

This class will begin at 6:00pm on Tuesday, November 5 and run for approximately 90 minutes. Wines tasted in class will be available for purchase with a discount available to attendees only. Seating is limited. Get tickets now.

Tuesday, November 12: Why Do I Hate Chardonnay? A Class To Make You Love Chardonnay (taught by Ren Peir, WSET3)

Difficulty level: Wine 101
Are you a member of the ABC ("Anything but Chardonnay") club? No judgement, but you may have noticed that your wine geek friends can't get enough of this incredibly versatile grape and its expressions from Burgundy and Champagne to Western Australia and beyond. If you're feeling left out, this class is for you. Break the stereotype and find out why wine industry folks are obsessed with the grape. In this class we'll learn the various production methods of Chardonnay and the subsequent effects on taste. Ren Peir, WSET III, might just make a believer out of you.

This class will begin at 6:00pm on Tuesday, November 12 and run for approximately 90 minutes. Wines tasted in class will be available for purchase with a discount available to attendees only. Seating is limited. Get tickets now.

Tuesday, November 19: So You Think You Know Argentina (taught by Julia Burke, DWSET)

Difficulty level: Wine 101
Julia Burke, DWSET, has been noticing a shift in the quality and style of the wines she's been tasting from Argentina over the last couple of years. Ambitious, elegant and better than ever, these wines bear little resemblance to some of the jammy Malbecs of the mid 2000s, and are instead fabulous expressions of terroir. So she went to Mendoza to see what all the fuss was about.

Hot on the heels of a recent visit to the heart and soul of Argentina's wine tradition, Julia is excited to share what she learned, and taste the new face of Argentina with you. We'll look at the geographic layout of its top regions, explore trends and innovations, and enjoy some fabulous wine.

This class will begin at 6:00pm on Tuesday, November 19 and run for approximately 90 minutes. Wines tasted in class will be available for purchase with a discount available to attendees only. Seating is limited. Get tickets now.

Monday, November 26: Blind Tasting Challenge, Thanksgiving Edition (taught by Julia Burke, DWSET)

Difficulty level: Deep Dive
Are you staying local for the holiday? Come on over to the Flatiron Wine school mezzanine and try your hand at one of Julia Burke DWSET's Blind Tasting Challenge sessions. For this one, with Thanksgiving right around the corner, we'll focus on one of Julia's all-time favorite grapes: the magical, mystical Riesling. It's unbeatable at demonstrating terroir, but it's also a dream for keen structural tasters, so let's get under the hood and understand what this grape looks like in its spiritual homeland and around the world.

There will be cheese.

This class will begin at 6:00pm on MONDAY, November 26 and run for approximately 90 minutes. Wines tasted in class will be available for purchase with a discount available to attendees only. Seating is limited. Get tickets now.

Voliero's Radical Rosso di Montalcino Could be Mistaken for Baby Brunello

Sangiovese from Tuscany may be the best source of under-$30 red wine in the world. But which Sangiovese exactly? Is it a racy Chianti Classico? An elegant Vino Nobile di Montepulciano?

Today, we’ll make the case that — at least with the delicious 2022s that are now coming on the market — your best and finest source of under $30 value in Sangiovese comes from Rosso di Montalcino.

A Secret Source for Stunning Volcanic Wines: Hungary's Somlói Vandor

One of the most fascinating volcanic wines we’ve tasted in some time come from the landlocked country of Hungary, specifically the area surrounding Lake Balaton. Made from the native Hungarian grapes Furmint and Juhfark, these wines offer a medley of generous fruit notes, refreshing acidity and that unique savory minerality imparted by volcanic soils.

Baricchi Timorasso: A Gorgeous Piedmont White, After 10 Years Aging

The 2014 Cascina Baricchi Timorraso “Ca Va Sans Dire” is a total showstopper. It comes from a vineyard planted in the 1950s on clay and limestone soils. It spent the first 6 months of its life in stainless steel tanks with regular stirring of the lees. It was then moved to neutral barriques where it rested for a whopping nine years before bottling.
