Franck Balthazar farms organically and vinifies with old-school Cornas precision, letting his granite terroir speak without makeup. Cuvee Casimir is his more accessible Cornas bottling, named in the family tradition and built for earlier drinking than his flagship sites. The 2023 leans into juicy black and red fruit, a twist of pepper, and the savory, smoky edge that marks this appellation. Approachable young, but it will hold and gain complexity over the next several years.

"The 2023 Cornas Cuvée Casimir Balthazar opens with expressive notes of orange blossom, fresh violets, black cherry, red plum, stemmy nuances and fine traces of cured meat. On the medium-bodied palate, it shows lifted freshness and impressive clarity. This is a carefully built, densely packed Cornas that I admittedly underestimated when tasting it from barrel at the winery last year. Like the Chaillot Cuvée Hommage from the same vintage, it carries tremendous intensity yet never feels heavy. Simply gorgeous." —Nicolas Greinacher

"Vinified with 100% whole clusters, the 2023 Cornas Cuvée Casimir Balthazar reveals aromas of cassis, dark berries and a touch of pepper, becoming more floral with aeration. Medium- to full-bodied, it’s round, enveloping and fleshy, supported by a fine structural frame. More tensile than the 2022, it concludes with a fresh, ethereal finish. This is a very successful Cornas." —Yohan Castaing

"A fresh, juicy and herbal style; the acidity isn’t terribly high but it does have a fresh feel. Black pepper, oregano and sappy raspberries make for a lighter, crunchier style than some vintages."

More about Franck Balthazar

As is so often the case when we want ready-to-drink and approachable wines that don’t break the bank, we look to a master who is famous for wines that are far more grand. In this case, the master is Franck Balthazar.

Balthazar seems to be on the cusp of joining the pantheon of great Northern Rhône traditionalists. He has thoroughbred holdings of great old vines planted on amazing sites which he works naturally. In the winery he employs old-school techniques and vinifies with little intervention (aka "natural"). The result of all his hard work are wines that express their terroir in the pure and profound way that only the “best ever” manage. It’s no surprise that the great Northern Rhône writer, Jonathan Livingstone-Learmonth, honored him with his "STGT" (soil to glass transfer) label, a label he uses for the few producers who manage to express their terroir purely and directly in their wines.
