Franck Balthazar is a Cornas vigneron who works organically and bottles his Syrah with rare clarity and finesse. Cuvee Juliette is part of his small, terroir-driven range, showing the perfumed, fine-grained side of the appellation. The 2023 offers floral-edged dark fruit, white pepper, and a smoky mineral lift, all wrapped in supple tannins. Lovely now with air, with the structure to develop nicely over the medium term.

"The 2023 Cornas Juliette debuts with delicate notes of violet and black cherry intertwined with cedar, graphite and fleshy subtleties. Medium- to full-bodied, elegant and precise, the 2023 is shaping up to be a savory Cornas, boasting sufficient freshness to remain in balance. This culminates with stamina on the taut finish." —Nicolas Greinacher

Robert Parker

"Vinified and matured without sulfur dioxide (with only a small addition at bottling) and crafted from 100% whole clusters, the 2023 Cornas Juliette reveals a striking bouquet of rose petals, dark wild berries, spices and grapefruit. Medium- to full-bodied, it’s dense and fleshy, with a firm, architectural tannic frame that lends both structure and elegance. Powerful yet refined, this is a distinctive and harmonious Cornas that should age gracefully." —Yohan Castaing

"Even more peppery than Balthazar’s other cuvées this year, this is a brisk, light-bodied style of Cornas, very herbal and peppery, with lovely acidity and relatively slight tannins for this appellation. Feels like a cool vintage, and drinks like one too – it’s refreshing. Similar to 2021 in style. Planted at 300m elevation, 100% whole bunches."

More about Franck Balthazar

As is so often the case when we want ready-to-drink and approachable wines that don’t break the bank, we look to a master who is famous for wines that are far more grand. In this case, the master is Franck Balthazar.

Balthazar seems to be on the cusp of joining the pantheon of great Northern Rhône traditionalists. He has thoroughbred holdings of great old vines planted on amazing sites which he works naturally. In the winery he employs old-school techniques and vinifies with little intervention (aka "natural"). The result of all his hard work are wines that express their terroir in the pure and profound way that only the “best ever” manage. It’s no surprise that the great Northern Rhône writer, Jonathan Livingstone-Learmonth, honored him with his "STGT" (soil to glass transfer) label, a label he uses for the few producers who manage to express their terroir purely and directly in their wines.
