This is mature Brunello from one of Montalcino's founding families, now well into its drinking window. Franco Pacenti farms 100% Sangiovese in the Canalicchio basin on Montalcino's cooler north-eastern slope, an area long counted among the denomination's finest. The family estate-bottled from 1966 and was one of the original founders of the Brunello Consorzio. Traditional winemaking rules here: long maceration, aging in large Slavonian and French oak casks, producing Brunellos that are powerful yet surprisingly lightweight on their feet. At nearly two decades, this 2008 should be in a lovely, savory place. Decant it.
