"The 2024 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Honivogl, a brand name rather than a site, is made from fruit picked along each side of the border between Axpoint and Singerriedl on eroded debris. Supple pear and yeast are gentle and tender on the nose. For now, this is more open than its siblings. Here, vivid white pepper is wrapped in subtle creaminess and ripe, smooth green-yellow pear flesh. The wine shows great direction and contour, with beautiful delineation of flavors that shimmer with white pepper. Franz Hirtzberger and F.X. Pichler are the two greatest producers of the Wachau and arguably of dry white wines in Austria. Located in the tiny village of Spitz, surrounded by mountains and the Danube, Hirtzberger makes Riesling that tastes like pure minerality and precision. His terraced vineyard names—Hochrain, Singerriedel, Steinporz—are synonymous with the greatest wines of the region.
