Wachau Grüner at the level that built Hirtzberger's name — without needing a special occasion to open it. Rotes Tor is a Spitz cru of mica-rich gneiss, and Federspiel is the middle tier of the Wachau's classification: ripe but not opulent, structured but not heavy, alcohol pulled back so the vineyard does the talking. The result is classic, savory Grüner — orchard fruit, white pepper, a saline lift through the finish — from one of the most coveted addresses in Austria. Franz Hirtzberger Sr. retired and Franz Jr. now runs things, but the philosophy hasn't moved an inch: site, precision, patience. If you've only ever met Grüner in liter bottles, this is the version with the table manners.

Franz Hirtzberger and F.X. Pichler are the two greatest producers of the Wachau and arguably of dry white wines in Austria. Located in the tiny village of Spitz, surrounded by mountains and the Danube, Hirtzberger makes Riesling that tastes like pure minerality and precision. His terraced vineyard names—Hochrain, Singerriedel, Steinporz—are synonymous with the greatest wines of the region.
