A multi-site Wachau Riesling that overdelivers without even trying. Steinerterrassen is Hirtzberger's Federspiel-tier blend of fruit from the estate's great Spitz crus — Setzberg, Hochrain, Steinporz, even a little Singerriedel — assembled into a mid-weight Riesling meant for early enjoyment rather than long sleep. Federspiel rules cap the alcohol around 12.5%, so what arrives in the glass is laser-clean: lime, white peach, crushed stone, the cool mineral hum of primary gneiss. Franz Hirtzberger Jr. now leads the estate his father turned into a Wachau benchmark, and this is the wine that shows you, for not very much money, what the fuss is about. Franz Hirtzberger and F.X. Pichler are the two greatest producers of the Wachau and arguably of dry white wines in Austria. Located in the tiny village of Spitz, surrounded by mountains and the Danube, Hirtzberger makes Riesling that tastes like pure minerality and precision.
