The Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr—"sundial"—is one of the Mosel's most legendary vineyard sites, a steep south-facing wall of weathered Devonian slate that Napoleon himself considered a pearl of the region. The Haag family has farmed here since 1605, and Oliver Haag (who took the reins in 2005 alongside his wife Jessica) continues a tradition that has earned the estate Gault Millau's first-ever Winemaker of the Year distinction. This Auslese, from the outstanding 2006 vintage—the finest for sweet Mosel wines since 1949—shows extraordinary complexity: tropical fruit, almond, and marzipan aromas over a concentrated, honeyed core, with the electric acidity that only steep-slope Mosel Riesling can deliver. The AP #10 designation indicates a specific lot that passed Germany's rigorous quality control testing. In half-bottle, this is an ideal format for a dessert course or meditation pour. Still evolving after nearly two decades, with many more ahead.

Antonio Galloni

94 points

"Pale golden yellow. Discreet aromas of nectarine, mincemeat and pine nut. Dense yet delicate, with juicy peach nectar flavor and subtle acidity in near-perfect balance. Creamy vanilla custard, clove and salty minerality mingle on the very long finish." —Joel B. Payne

Robert Parker

92 points

"The 2006 Braunebeger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese A.P. #10 inhabits a different world from its predecessors in this collection, with banana, mango, and pineapple backed by caramel and served on a palate slick, even oily, with pure honey of botrytis. This lush, luscious, gaudy tropical fruit character and overt though strikingly pure botrytis continue through the opulent wine’s long finish, so that if there are mineral elements present, they have yet to emerge, and there is nothing like the refinement or elegance of the best wines in this and other 2006 Mosel collections. In short, this is impressive in a manner more like what one expected of the 2006s knowing the conditions of harvest, including rampant botrytis. All this said, we have at least a “30-year wine” here as well, and a lot can happen as it evolves." —David Schildknecht

Wine Spectator

"A beauty, sleek and detailed, featuring lime, peach, vanilla cream and brown spice notes. This is impeccably balanced, blending its plush texture with bright acidity. Has a succulent, lime- and mineral-tinged finish. Drink now through 2030."

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
