Kékfrankos is the most important grape in Eger, the wine region of northeast Hungary, and this Limited Edition is Gál Tibor's concentrated, complex take on it. If the name is new to you, you probably know the grape as Blaufränkisch. In Hungary it's a native variety, and here it gets the treatment it deserves. The 2018 fermented spontaneously and then aged 12 months, mostly in used Hungarian oak, so the wood shapes the wine without piling on vanilla. The estate's story starts with Tibor Gál Sr., who worked his way up from cellar hand to head winemaker at Ornellaia in Tuscany before bringing that ambition home to Eger. His son Tibor Jr. credits him as the first person in Eger to see the importance of terroir-based viticulture. The family now farms 40 hectares sustainably on the Nagy-Eged hill and the land around it. For Blaufränkisch lovers, or anyone who wants a serious Central European red that's off the usual path, it's well worth trying.

Hungarian beef goulash or pork pörkölt with sweet paprika; duck breast with a sour-cherry sauce; grilled lamb chops; venison stew; wild mushroom and paprika ragout over nokedli (Hungarian dumplings).

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Eger Kékfrankos profile: dark cherry, blackberry and plum with a streak of black pepper and spice. Medium to full in body, with bright, juicy acidity and firm but fine-grained tannins; ageing mostly in used oak adds subtle structure rather than vanilla. Think a fresher, more peppery take on Syrah, finishing dry and savoury.
