More about Gaspard Brochet

Gaspard was born in 1995, grew up in wine (his dad made it under the Vincent Brochet label), left to do graphic design, came back in 2013. Took over 3.18 hectares in Ecueil in 2019 and went immediately biodynamic. No-addition winemaking in barrels from Germany, Burgundy, and family reserves. Young, precise, uncompromising.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Polaner Selections has to say about this wine:

VineyardFrom a vineyard encolosed by forestOrientationMultiple parcels, exposure variesSoilclay with brown and white sandy soilsViticultureStrong emphasis on biodiversity and soil health. Biodynamically farmed since 2022.VinificationSpontaneous alcoholic co-fermentation of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, no topping up of barrels to give the wine light exposure to oxygen.AgingNo malo; larger barrels bring freshness. They aren't topped up and a voile develops.

Tasting Profile

Pale straw color with aromas of green apple, lemon blossom, and flinty minerals. Medium body with bright acidity, citrus and stone fruit flavors, and a dry, mineral-driven finish.

Domaine Stéphane Magnien is a fourth generation small domaine of only 4.5 hectares in Morey-Saint-Denis. These are wines of great purity and focus. The farming is meticulous and they have never used herbicides. The vines are all selection massale including lots of Pinot Fin and Pinot Tordu that have low yields of superbly flavorful grapes. They have a large percentage of old vines; some were planted by Stephane's grandfather. The premier crus might see 15% new oak, the village level wines have no new oak. The grapes are hand-harvested. Long fermentations are done with indigenous yeasts. After a lengthy elevage, the wines are bottled without fining or filtration. These are delicious and old-fashioned wines in the best sense and represent remarkable value from the Cote d'Or.

Stephane Magnien has nothing in common with any other Magniens in Morey-Saint-Denis and their styles could not be more different.
