All roads lead to Vajra. The Vaira family farms the cool, westernmost edge of Barolo above the village of Vergne, and Albe is their classic-village Barolo, blended from three high-altitude sites (the name nods to the alpine sunrises and sunsets these vineyards catch). It is the most open and approachable wine in the lineup, built for pleasure over power. The 2013 was a structured, classically proportioned vintage, and at a decade-plus this bottle has softened into a lovely mature window. Drink now over the next few years.

More about G.D. Vajra

G.D. Vajra traces back to 1968, when Aldo Vajra inherited his grandparents' farm in Vergne, the highest village in Barolo. He was a pioneer of organic viticulture in Piedmont—certified in 1971, decades before it became fashionable. His Langhe Nebbiolo showcases the grape at its most approachable, fermented naturally, aged in neutral oak.
