Bricco delle Viole is Vajra's crown jewel: by the family's own account the highest vineyard in the comune of Barolo, climbing to 480 meters on the cool, breezy ridge above Vergne. That altitude gives this wine its signature lift, perfume and freshness, plus the structure to age for decades. The 2010 came from one of the truly great, long-lived modern Barolo vintages, prized for its balance and ageworthiness. At fifteen years it is entering a beautiful mature phase but has years left; decant and give it time.

Antonio Galloni

96 points

"The 2010 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is going to need quite a bit of time to fully come together. Dark cherries, plums, tobacco and spices burst from the glass in an intense, structured Barolo that hits all the high notes. Next to the Ravera, the Bricco delle Viole is more floral, lifted and finessed, especially with time in the glass. Rose petals, savory herbs and sweet spices add the last nuance of complexity. The 2010 is fabulous; it's as simple as that." —Antonio Galloni

"Barolo. Easy, fresh and lively even if not that distinct. Dry finish with sweet crystalline start and some pungent char notes and not shortage of autumnal fruit and firm tannins. Not heavy. A palate scrub."

Decanter

97 points

"After a long winter delayed bud break, the cool spring saw regular rainfall and the summer continued without extremes of temperature. Grapes were picked during the second half of October and given a 50 day maceration. Currently, the 2010 is an intriguing tangle of violet, lavender, pepper and mint. Minerally and textured, the palate is wound up in a firm, tannic grasp, boasting an unstoppable finish, both of which bode well for a long life."

Wine Spectator

"The solid core and taut structure are coated with cherry and raspberry flavors. Though light-weight, this red is intense and long, with a firmly tannic finish. Very fresh in the end."

More about G.D. Vajra

G.D. Vajra traces back to 1968, when Aldo Vajra inherited his grandparents' farm in Vergne, the highest village in Barolo. He was a pioneer of organic viticulture in Piedmont—certified in 1971, decades before it became fashionable. His Langhe Nebbiolo showcases the grape at its most approachable, fermented naturally, aged in neutral oak.
