This is a 1995 Cascina Francia from Giovanni Conterno's time, and Giovanni is the man who split with his own brother rather than give up on traditional Barolo. In 1969 his younger brother Aldo wanted to try a more modern style, so the two went their separate ways, and Giovanni kept making Barolo the way his father and grandfather had. Five years later he bought Cascina Francia, 14 hectares in one of Serralunga d'Alba's best spots. It was a wheat field at the time, though vines had grown there before, and it became the family's monopole. Until then the Conternos had made their Barolo only from purchased grapes. The grapes are picked by hand. Roberto Conterno, Giovanni's son, runs the estate now and carries on that approach. He worked alongside his father for many years before Giovanni died in 2004. As with any older Barolo, stand the bottle upright for a day before you open it, decant it gently and pour it into a big glass.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"Medium red. Superripe aromas of raspberry, cherry, redcurrant jam, strawberry, camphor and tartufi. Tightly wound and vibrant, with compelling density and clarity of red fruit flavor. Firm acidity and toothcoating tannins give this Barolo terrific structure and grip. Very long, vibrant aftertaste. Like the above two wines, this has fruit of steel." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

92 points

"A young and dense current Barolo release is the 1995 Barolo Cascina Francia. It possesses classic Nebbiolo traits of melted asphalt, cedar wood, sweet cherries, rose petals, and truffles. Full-bodied, deep, and chewy, with an intriguing earthy smokiness, this full-bodied, tannic, impressively concentrated and endowed Barolo can be drunk now, but will be even better with an additional 2-4 years of cellaring; it will last for 15+ years." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

More about Giacomo Conterno

The Piedmont legend. Giovanni Conterno opened a tavern in 1908, made Barolo for it, and the first Riserva changed everything. His son Giacomo took over in 1934, and the estate's been making world-class Nebbiolo ever since. Monfortino Riserva is aged seven years minimum in huge botti—old school done perfectly.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo, tajarin with butter and shaved white truffle, roast guinea fowl or pheasant, or a wedge of aged Castelmagno.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic profile of traditional Serralunga Barolo: sour cherry, tar, violets and dried herbs, joined by the leather, truffle and forest-floor notes that come with bottle age. It is typically full-bodied but more structured than plush, with lively acidity, the fine-grained, grippy tannins Serralunga is known for, and a long, savoury finish.
