From one of Barolo's greatest traditional houses, in one of its great classic vintages. Giacomo Conterno's Cascina Francia comes from a single 14-hectare clay-limestone vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba, made with natural yeasts, long maceration, and years in large Slavonian casks before release. The 2004 is a balanced, structured, age-worthy vintage that earned wide admiration, and after two decades it's settling into a beautiful mature stride while keeping plenty in reserve. A profound bottle of traditional Nebbiolo. Decant and give it air.

More about Giacomo Conterno

The Piedmont legend. Giovanni Conterno opened a tavern in 1908, made Barolo for it, and the first Riserva changed everything. His son Giacomo took over in 1934, and the estate's been making world-class Nebbiolo ever since. Monfortino Riserva is aged seven years minimum in huge botti—old school done perfectly.

Tasting Profile

Maturing Nebbiolo: dried cherry, rose, tar and leather emerging over dark fruit. Full-bodied, firm tannins softening, lively acidity. Drinking well, will hold.
