Conterno's legendary Cascina Francia in a more approachable guise. This single-vineyard Serralunga Barolo comes from clay-limestone soils, made traditionally by Roberto Conterno with natural yeasts, long maceration, and aging in large Slavonian botti. The 2005 was a lighter, more accessible Barolo vintage, and that works in its favor here: at this age it offers the depth and complexity of a great traditional address without demanding the patience the bigger years require. Mature and ready to drink. A relatively gentle way into one of Barolo's most serious names.

Antonio Galloni

95 points

"Conterno’s 2005 Barolo Cascina Francia has developed in a very pretty, delicate wine. Open-knit and supple, the 2005 offers good depth and vibrancy to match its silky, nuanced personality. The 2005 is an especially polished Cascina Francia that is just entering the early part of its plateau of maturity. Interestingly, it is also the total stylistic opposite of the much more virile Monfortino." —Antonio Galloni

Wine Spectator

"Wonderful aromas of plum and sultana, with hints of wood. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins, plenty of ripe fruit and a citrus undertone that turns to a mahogany and light chocolate undertone. Complex and tight."

More about Giacomo Conterno

The Piedmont legend. Giovanni Conterno opened a tavern in 1908, made Barolo for it, and the first Riserva changed everything. His son Giacomo took over in 1934, and the estate's been making world-class Nebbiolo ever since. Monfortino Riserva is aged seven years minimum in huge botti—old school done perfectly.
