2006 is the muscular one — a structured, powerful, deeply tannic Barolo vintage, and Cascina Francia is the most intensely tannic of Giacomo Conterno's sites, so this was never going to be a wine in a hurry. Nearly two decades on it's entering its prime with years still ahead of it. Cascina Francia is the single contiguous clay-limestone parcel in Serralunga d'Alba that Giovanni Conterno bought in 1974, and in 2006 it was still the estate's only Barolo vineyard — Cerretta came in 2008, Arione later. The winemaking is the ultra-traditional house method that has barely changed across generations: native yeasts, a long maceration, then four years in large Slavonian botti before the wine is allowed out. This is also an early vintage of Roberto Conterno's tenure; he took the helm on his father's death in 2004 and carried the purist approach forward without compromise. Decant it hours ahead, use a big glass, and don't rush it.

Antonio Galloni

"Is Giacomo Conterno’s 2006 Barolo Cascina Francia a traditional or modern Barolo? Great question. Texturally, the 2006 boasts marvelous depth and a level of pure intensity not often seen in traditionally made wines, yet the aromatics, tannin and overall structure are all super classic. This is another austere, tannic Barolo best left alone." —Antonio Galloni

"Dark but very subtly graded colour, deep ruby. Light aroma. Savoury marmite (yeast extract) aromas with undertow of very ripe fruit – all in pretty admirable balance. Some dustiness rather than purity of fruit but overall one of the more intriguing and alluring wines. Very clean finish though not that long."

Wine Spectator

"Perfumed, this Barolo combines plum and berry with sandalwood and leather aromas and flavors. The sweetness stands up to the dense, refined tannins, leaving an aftertaste of spice and mineral."

More about Giacomo Conterno

The Piedmont legend. Giovanni Conterno opened a tavern in 1908, made Barolo for it, and the first Riserva changed everything. His son Giacomo took over in 1934, and the estate's been making world-class Nebbiolo ever since. Monfortino Riserva is aged seven years minimum in huge botti—old school done perfectly.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo, tajarin with butter and white truffle, roast guinea fowl, braised beef cheek with polenta, or aged Castelmagno.

Tasting Profile

Dried rose, sour cherry, tar, leather and a savory, earthy edge from age. Full-bodied and dry, with high acidity and substantial, firm tannins that still frame a very long finish.
