Nineteen years on, this is classical traditional Barolo drinking deep into its window. Cascina Francia is the legendary 16-hectare estate in Serralunga d'Alba that Giovanni Conterno purchased in 1974 — a single contiguous parcel that became the foundation of modern Giacomo Conterno. Today the estate is run by Roberto Conterno, who took the helm following his father's death in 2004 and has carried the family's purist traditional approach forward without compromise. The 2006 vintage was a solid classical Barolo year — structured, balanced, built to age — and the Cascina Francia bottling spends 48 months in large Slavonian botti, the traditional method that lets the wine evolve slowly and arrive in glass with all its tension intact. Nineteen years on, this is exactly where the wine wants to be: tannins resolved into silk, aromatics layered and deep, and the unmistakable Serralunga power still humming underneath. A library Barolo to treasure.

"Is Giacomo Conterno’s 2006 Barolo Cascina Francia a traditional or modern Barolo? Great question. Texturally, the 2006 boasts marvelous depth and a level of pure intensity not often seen in traditionally made wines, yet the aromatics, tannin and overall structure are all super classic. This is another austere, tannic Barolo best left alone." —Antonio Galloni

"Dark but very subtly graded colour, deep ruby. Light aroma. Savoury marmite (yeast extract) aromas with undertow of very ripe fruit – all in pretty admirable balance. Some dustiness rather than purity of fruit but overall one of the more intriguing and alluring wines. Very clean finish though not that long."

Wine Spectator

"Perfumed, this Barolo combines plum and berry with sandalwood and leather aromas and flavors. The sweetness stands up to the dense, refined tannins, leaving an aftertaste of spice and mineral."

More about Giacomo Conterno

The Piedmont legend. Giovanni Conterno opened a tavern in 1908, made Barolo for it, and the first Riserva changed everything. His son Giacomo took over in 1934, and the estate's been making world-class Nebbiolo ever since. Monfortino Riserva is aged seven years minimum in huge botti—old school done perfectly.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

A wine built for the Piemontese table — brasato al Barolo, tajarin with white truffle, wild boar ragu over pappardelle, aged Castelmagno, or roasted veal shanks with rosemary. Carafe optional, attention mandatory.

Tasting Profile

Resolved and layered — dried cherry, dried rose, tar, leather, tobacco, truffle, and graphite. The tannins are silky and integrated, the acidity bright, the finish long, savory, and laced with that distinctive Serralunga iron-mineral grip.
