The more generous side of a Barolo legend. Giacomo Conterno's Cascina Francia comes from a single clay-limestone vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba, made the traditional way with natural yeasts, long maceration, and Slavonian-cask aging. The 2007 was a warm, riper vintage that produced more openly charming, approachable Barolos, and that suits this bottle now: it offers Conterno's depth and pedigree in a softer, more welcoming frame. Mature and drinking beautifully today. A great chance to taste this iconic address without a long wait.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2007 Barolo Cascina Francia is a wine I deeply regret not buying more of when it was readily available. There was no Monfortino that year, so all the fruit went into the Francia. Deep and explosive in the glass, the 2007 offers up copious dark fruit, scorched earth, gravel, tar and menthol. Broad swaths of tannin lend muscular intensity throughout. This is classic Serralunga all the way." —Antonio Galloni

More about Giacomo Conterno

The Piedmont legend. Giovanni Conterno opened a tavern in 1908, made Barolo for it, and the first Riserva changed everything. His son Giacomo took over in 1934, and the estate's been making world-class Nebbiolo ever since. Monfortino Riserva is aged seven years minimum in huge botti—old school done perfectly.
