A cool, classical Barolo vintage from the estate that defines Piedmontese tradition. Cascina Francia is the single vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba that Giovanni Conterno bought in 1974 — roughly 14 hectares of clay-limestone on a south-facing slope, planted to Nebbiolo and Barbera — and for decades it was the sole source of the family's Barolo. The winemaking has barely changed: native yeasts, a long maceration, then years in large Slavonian oak casks before the wine is allowed out. 2008 was a long, cool growing season in the Langhe, the kind of year that gives firm structure and bright acidity rather than upfront weight, and at eighteen years a well-stored bottle is in a lovely place, with plenty of life ahead of it. Decant a few hours ahead and pour it into a big glass.

"The 2008 Barolo Cascina Francia possesses gorgeous inner perfume, layers of sublime fruit and fabulous overall balance. Plums, dark cherries and licorice are followed by darker notes of graphite and tar as the wine opens up in the glass. Today, the 2008 is much less expressive than it has been the many times I have tasted it from barrel. It will be interesting to see how the 2008 develops and whether it puts on weight or remains more of a mid-weight, gracious Barolo. Either way, it is fabulous." —Antonio Galloni

"There's a mineral component here that lends a distinctive savory element to the cherry, currant, underbrush and tea flavors. Elegant, yet intense and balanced, showcasing a lighter style than most Barolos, with a firm, earthy finish. Still locked up. Best from 2016 through 2035."

More about Giacomo Conterno

The Piedmont legend. Giovanni Conterno opened a tavern in 1908, made Barolo for it, and the first Riserva changed everything. His son Giacomo took over in 1934, and the estate's been making world-class Nebbiolo ever since. Monfortino Riserva is aged seven years minimum in huge botti—old school done perfectly.
