A celebrated classic vintage from one of Barolo's most legendary estates. Giacomo Conterno's Cascina Francia (now simply labeled Francia from 2010 onward) is a single 14-hectare clay-limestone vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba, made with native yeasts, long maceration, and aging in large Slavonian botti. The 2010 is widely regarded as one of the great modern Barolo vintages, with the structure, perfume, and balance for very long aging. Still relatively youthful, it's drinking well with a decant but has many years ahead. A cornerstone bottle for the cellar.

"The 2010 Barolo Francia is an exotic, beguiling beauty. Lavender, sage, menthol, tobacco and dried rose petals are some of the notes that open up in the glass. Constantly changing in the glass, the 2010 is utterly captivating. The combination of super-expressive aromatics, pliant fruit and pulsating tannins is something to behold. It will be many years before the 2010 is ready to deliver the goods, but it is already utterly captivating from the very first taste. Readers should note that, because of new vineyard regulations, the Cascina Francia is now known simply as Francia. In 2010, the corks had already been printed by the time that decision was made, so the corks on the 2010 read 'Cascina Francia.'" —Antonio Galloni

"An up-front tannic edge accents the ripe cherry, plum, wild berry, licorice, tobacco and iron flavors in this red, exhibiting firm grip. With air, this finds balance, featuring a classically proportioned structure and a long, complex finish. Very promising."

More about Giacomo Conterno

The Piedmont legend. Giovanni Conterno opened a tavern in 1908, made Barolo for it, and the first Riserva changed everything. His son Giacomo took over in 1934, and the estate's been making world-class Nebbiolo ever since. Monfortino Riserva is aged seven years minimum in huge botti—old school done perfectly.
