Monfortino is not a vineyard but a decision: the very best Nebbiolo in the estate's Serralunga vineyards is earmarked while it is still on the vine, fermented separately without temperature control and with a longer maceration than anything else in the cellar, then left in large Slavonian casks for six to seven years before bottling, and released only when Roberto Conterno judges it worthy of the name. The name itself comes from Monforte d'Alba, where the family originated, but the fruit is pure Serralunga d'Alba, chiefly from Cascina Francia, the 14-hectare clay-and-limestone amphitheater the Conternos bought in 1974 and the source of the estate's most famous wines, joined in recent vintages by the neighboring Arione cru. 2020 was an unhurried growing season in Barolo, with an extended vegetative cycle, cool nights and a late-September harvest, yielding wines with ripe, resolved tannins and genuine perfume rather than brute weight. This is not a bottle to open on a whim: it reaches the market already several years into its life and still wants many more, with the 2030s the earliest sensible starting point and decades of life beyond that. When the day comes, stand it upright well beforehand, decant it generously, and share it with people who will notice.

"The 2020 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is a hedonistic turn-on. Silky and pliant, with captivating purity, the 2020 is a total delight. Bright acids drive through a core of vibrant red-toned fruit. Sage, lavender, rose petal and chalk are some of the notes that develop over time. The 2020 has the gorgeous inner perfume and sweetness that is such a signature of warmer years, a quality that can make young Monfortino so seductive right out of the gate. Polished, silky tannins frame the long, resonant finish. Barolo at its sexiest." —Antonio Galloni

"The Giacomo Conterno 2020 Barolo Riserva Monfortino, tasted in bottle ahead of its October release, is quite beautiful in its softness, generosity and sheer Nebbiolo delicacy. Compared to the more structured 2019, the 2020 feels fuller, silkier and more immediately embracing, with the sensation of biting into ripe fruit. The tannins are nearly invisible, supple and seamless, giving the wine a plump, graceful mouthfeel without sacrificing depth or pedigree. Roberto Conterno captured the vintage perfectly when he said, "Between 2019, 2020 and 2021, the 2020 will be the first one we drink."" —Monica Larner

More about Giacomo Conterno

The Piedmont legend. Giovanni Conterno opened a tavern in 1908, made Barolo for it, and the first Riserva changed everything. His son Giacomo took over in 1934, and the estate's been making world-class Nebbiolo ever since. Monfortino Riserva is aged seven years minimum in huge botti—old school done perfectly.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Slow-cooked meats that can wait for it: brasato al Barolo, wild boar ragu with tajarin, roast goose. Finish with aged Castelmagno or Parmigiano.

Tasting Profile

Rose petal, dried cherry, tar, licorice and iron over a deep savory core. Full-bodied and firmly structured, with abundant ripe tannin and vivid acidity. Enormously long and mineral, and only beginning to unfold.
