Old-vine Napa Cab from one of the valley's quiet historic sites — and from a true legend of California winemaking. Mike Grgich, the Croatian-born winemaker who made the 1973 Château Montelena Chardonnay that stunned the world at the 1976 Judgment of Paris, founded Grgich Hills with the Hills family in 1977; the estate farms biodynamically today. The Yountville Selection draws from one of the oldest blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon vines in Napa Valley — Inglenook clone planted on St. George rootstock in 1959, the second-oldest Cab planting in the entire valley. Old vines, deep roots, and Mike's classical hand produced a powerful, structured wine. Mike Grgich passed in 2023; the legacy in this bottle is considerable. Nineteen years on, the firm tannins are softening.

Open and pour with grilled bistecca alla fiorentina, braised lamb shanks with gremolata, duck confit with cherry jus, or wild mushroom ragù over creamy polenta. Pair the cheese course with an aged Pecorino or Comté over a year old.

Tasting Profile

Powerful, savory, evolving. Blackberry, dark licorice, black currant, allspice, dried herbs, and a layer of leather and forest floor. Tannins firm but resolving; long, structured finish. Big old-vine Napa Cab settling gracefully.
