Guido Porro is the under-the-radar traditionalist of Serralunga d'Alba, a grower who flies below the press's attention by choice and makes deeply expressive, classic Barolo. Lazzairasco, a monopole sub-zone of Serralunga's great Lazzarito cru, is one of the village's most prized sites, giving the powerful, structured, long-lived style the village is famous for. This 2008 comes from a fine, classic vintage and now has well over a decade of age, having softened into a mature, savory window. A back-vintage Barolo from a quietly excellent producer, drinking beautifully now. From a private collection.

More about Guido Porro

Under the radar, decidedly traditional—that's Guido Porro, a fourth-generation grower in Serralunga d'Alba who makes Barolo the old-fashioned way. Natural yeasts, three weeks on the skins, three years in Slavonian oak, 15,000 bottles from 4.5 hectares. His deeply expressive single-vineyard Barolos (Vigna Lazzairasco, Vigna S. Caterina) offer exceptional quality and an even rarer thing: an insider tip.
