Gunther Steinmetz, Chenin Blanc Kestener Paulinsberg, 2024

Chenin Blanc on the Mosel is almost a contradiction in terms, and that is exactly why Stefan Steinmetz planted it. On the brutally steep gray slate of the Kestener Paulinsberg, he put in Loire's great chameleon grape in 2021, and this 2024 is the very first bottling off those young vines. It comes out bone-dry and sunlit, with the salinity and cut you expect from great Mosel slate wearing an unfamiliar accent. Consider this a front-row seat to an experiment from one of the region's most restless young talents. Genuinely rare, and unlikely to sit around.

"The 2024 Chenin Blanc Paulinsberg is from vines planted in 2021. This is the first wine made from vines rooted in extremely steep, gray weathered slate. Only a flicker of passion fruit reaches the nose before an oaky creaminess appears. The palate is bright, juicy with lemon and creamily supple with smoky oak. The 2024 is bone-dry and sunny." —Anne Krebiehl MW

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
