What is this wine?
Heinrich Spindler is a historic family estate in Forst, Pfalz, with a reputation for precise, terroir-driven Rieslings. The Kirchenstück vineyard is the crown jewel of Forst—widely considered one of Germany’s greatest white wine sites. Classified as Grosse Lage (the German equivalent of Grand Cru), Kirchenstück combines basalt, sandstone, and limestone soils that give Rieslings of remarkable power and elegance. The 2023 vintage produced wines with purity, freshness, and a crystalline sense of terroir.

Why get this wine?
Kirchenstück is often compared to Montrachet in stature, and Spindler’s version represents one of the finest and most affordable ways to experience this legendary site. With its precision, depth, and ability to age for decades, it is a true benchmark Riesling. For collectors or serious white wine drinkers, this bottling offers rare pedigree at outstanding value compared to top white Burgundy.

What does this wine taste like?
Intense yet refined, with citrus, stone fruit, and green apple layered over smoky, stony minerality. Vibrant acidity drives the wine, while hints of herbs and spice add complexity. The finish is long, saline, and structured.

When should you drink this wine?
Already expressive but best from 2026 onward as it gains depth and texture. Will age gracefully for 15–20 years. Perfect with shellfish, sushi, or fine poultry dishes.

"The 2023 Riesling Forster Kirchenstück was fermented in stainless steel only. Gentle smoke is all the shy nose is willing to show. The palate comes with a touch of passion fruit and the immense, mouth-watering juiciness of yellow nectarines. Citrus spice tingles beautifully and teasingly around the edges. The palate is smooth and ripe but beautifully fresh and ripe, wonderfully captured and aromatic. This is a wine with absolute balance and serenity. It's deliciously citric." —Anne Krebiehl MW

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
