Chambertin is one of Burgundy's two undisputed summits in Gevrey — Clos de Bèze its only peer — and Henri Boillot is a name that needs no preface. With Guillaume Boillot long heading the red-wine team at the estate, the house produces Chambertin from minuscule holdings, made with the same restraint and clarity that built its reputation across Meursault and Volnay. The 2015 vintage was Burgundy at full ripeness: powerful, statuesque reds underpinned by acidity, wines built for the long haul. A decade on, this is just starting to open — the primary fruit beginning to fold into Chambertin's classic register of dark cherry, forest floor, sweet spice, and iron-rich minerality. Drink now with air, or watch it deepen for another fifteen-plus years. A genuine cellar wine, in a window that rewards patience.

Antonio Galloni

95 points

"Dark red with ruby tones. Cooler and more medicinal on the nose than the Clos de Bèze, showing a eucalyptus note to the black cherry and boysenberry aromas. Then densely packed, highly concentrated and fine-grained, enlivened by savory crushed-stone minerality. Shows the thickness and power of Chambertin but no excess weight. (Still, Guillaume Boillot prefers the Clos de Bèze today for its delicacy, noting that both wines received the same 100% new oak and full destemming, "so the only difference is terroir.") A bit clenched on the finish, showing firm, building tannins." —Stephen Tanzer

"Despite the nose being notably ripe it is both highly restrained and brooding as it requires considerable swirling to liberate the dark currant liqueur, plum, wet stone, spice and game scents. Somewhat counterintuitively, there is a slightly finer mouth feel to the more mineral-driven if somewhat less powerful medium weight plus flavors that possess a genuinely marvelous mouth feel, all wrapped in a backward but not really austere finale. That said, this is very clearly built-to-age and is likely to require every bit of 20 years before it finally reaches its apogee. Like the Clos de Bèze, this is a buy and forget wine."

More about Henri Boillot

Fifth generation on his family's Burgundy estate—Henri Boillot is a 'star winemaker' whose white wines rank among Burgundy's most extensive and remarkable. Based in Meursault with 19 hectares spread across the Côte de Beaune's finest appellations, he crafts whites that are straightforward, taut, precise, pure, and elegant. His monopoly, Puligny-Montrachet Clos de la Mouchère, is his flagship.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Built for serious occasions and serious cooking — roast duck, squab, rack of lamb, beef tenderloin with bone-marrow sauce. Aged hard cheeses (Comté, époisses) finish the meal. Decant or carafe with generous air.

Tasting Profile

Dark cherry, black raspberry, forest floor, sweet spice, and iron-tinged minerality. Powerful but precise — the 2015 ripeness wrapped around Chambertin's classic structure. Fine tannins, long savory finish. A decade in, just unfurling.
