The Gaisberg is a steep, southwest-facing slope of siliceous brown earth over weathered mica schist in the cool Kamptal, and it makes Riesling of laser focus and stony intensity. Johannes Hirsch farms it biodynamically, letting the site speak in a dry, mineral register that has nothing to do with the sweeter German style. This 2023 is the youthful, coiled version: bright, high-tension, and vibrating with citrus and crushed rock. Drink it now for the electricity or cellar it and watch that stony spine unwind for a decade.

"The 2023 Riesling Gaisberg is from the upper reaches of the site’s gneiss soils, fermented in stainless steel and transferred into an old acacia barrel in February 2024. Crushed citrus foliage and pink grapefruit rise seductively from the glass. The palate brings a deeper ripeness, a deeper fruit, something profound and stony yet filled to the brim with juicy citrus aromatics.
