This is the Hospices de Beaune cuvée that comes up late in the famous charity auction, and the Hospices itself says it usually offers excellent value for money. It's the smart pick in a sale better known for its trophies. The cuvée is a Beaune Premier Cru Pinot Noir blended from three climats: Les Grèves, Les Aigrots and La Mignotte. The Hospices explains that each one does a job. Chert and sandy soils give the wine a refined start, the heavier clays of Les Aigrots fill out the middle, and the young vines of La Mignotte add a generous finish. The name honours two brothers. Hugues Bétault was an equerry and Counsellor-Secretary to the King of France, and in the 17th century he saved the Hôtel-Dieu from ruin during war and epidemics. He built it an airy infirmary and bought land for its gardens, and after his death his brother Louis made several more gifts. This 2008 was raised by Louis Jadot, so here's a chance to drink Hospices Beaune with well over a decade in bottle, from a cuvée valued for what's in the glass, not the headlines.

More about Hospices de Beaune

The Hospices de Beaune is less a producer than an institution: a medieval charity hospital that owns some of Burgundy's best vineyards and sells its new wine every November at the most famous charity wine auction in the world.

Nicolas Rolin, chancellor to the Duke of Burgundy, and his wife Guigone de Salins founded the hospital in 1443 to care for the poor, and the first gift of vines followed in 1457. Over the centuries benefactors kept leaving it land, and today it holds about 60 hectares, roughly 85% of them premier and grand cru. Each cuvée is named for the donor whose bequest it comes from, such as Cuvée Baudot or Cuvée Madeleine Collignon.

The Hospices' own team grows and vinifies the wine, but on the third Sunday of November it is sold by the barrel, and the buyer takes home young wine that still needs to be raised. Each barrel goes to an éleveur, often a respected négociant or a top grower, who ages and bottles it and whose name appears on the label.

That makes every Hospices bottle a collaboration, and the same vineyard can taste quite different depending on whose cellar it went to. That's the fun of it: great terroir and a famous winemaker's hand in the glass.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with morels or chanterelles, coq au vin, seared duck breast with a cherry jus, veal chop with mushroom cream sauce, oeufs en meurette, aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Beaune Premier Cru profile: red cherry and raspberry with touches of earth and gentle spice, in a medium-bodied, supple Pinot Noir. It typically opens with finesse, fills out through a rounder, fleshier middle and finishes generously, with fine tannins and fresh acidity. Think a riper, more plush step up from everyday red Burgundy.
