Les Chaffots is a high-elevation Premier Cru tucked above Clos Saint-Denis, where thinner soils and cooler temps translate into a more mineral, brooding expression of Morey-Saint-Denis. It’s a site that demands a deft touch—and few do it better than Hubert Lignier, whose wines are known for their clarity, structure, and aging potential.

The 2022 vintage brings a pitch-perfect balance of ripe black cherry and plum fruit, earthy spice, and savory, stony tension. There’s a quiet power here: fine but firm tannins, deep mineral structure, and a long, coiled finish that promises years of evolution ahead.

This isn’t flashy Morey—it’s contemplative, precise, and built for the cellar. Decant now for a glimpse of what’s to come, or tuck it away for 8–15 years and let it unfurl in full.

"Firm reduction presently overshadows the fruit. Otherwise, there is equally good intensity to the bigger-bodied and notably more powerful flavors that manage to be both suave yet precise on the very firm, youthfully austere and impressively long finale. Like the Baudes, this is a wine with excellent aging potential." —Allen Meadows

"The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Chaffots 1er Cru comes from vines planted in 1968 and is the first vintage where they were tended organically. Blended with one-third whole bunches, this has a succinct bouquet of mineral-rich red fruit that blossoms in the glass. Very focused. The palate is medium-bodied, very poised, and saline with fine-grain tannins. It is powdery in texture and long and tender towards the finish. Bon vin!" —Neal Martin

"The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Chaffots is tauter and more tensile than the ampler Riotte, reflecting its stonier, higher-altitude terroir. Revealing aromas of smoky berries, plums, spices and loamy soil, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and saline." —William Kelley

"The top of the slope above the Clos Saint-Denis is classed as premier cru Les Chaffots (the bottom of the climat is grand cru Clos Saint-Denis). Laurent Lignier uses his half-hectare (all above 300 m elevation) here to craft a sublime wine—it is a superlative spot in hot years such as 2022. This wine boasts fresh cherry and pomegranate fruit aromas with an edge of floral notes and a hint of earth and smoke. The texture is tannic and firm, with impressive concentration and length. It should open well in five to seven years and drink for another twenty beyond that."

More about Hubert Lignier

Laurent Lignier runs this Morey-Saint-Denis legend—vines planted in 1880, now farmed organic and biodynamic with a light touch that matters. Twenty-four bottlings from nine hectares, including four Grand Crus (Clos de la Roche, Charmes-Chambertin, Griotte-Chambertin). No fining, no filtration, just open-top cement tanks and natural yeasts doing what they've always done.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

The Ligniers own just under half a hectare of 50-year-old vines in this great premier cru, which sits just above Clos-Saint-Denis on the slope. This vineyard yields a wine of brooding tension, black of fruit and stern, with a rigorous acid profile and real power underpinning it. “Les Chaffots” is unfailingly a profound wine that beckons for some patience, but the purity of fruit is striking here, even in the context of such tight-grained structure.
