Old-vine Chambolle-Musigny from a small family domaine, and 2019 is a milestone year for the house: it's when Tanguy Le Guen joined his father Dominique as the seventh generation of winemakers. The Vieilles Vignes comes from just over a hectare spread across seven small parcels, among them Les Mombies, Les Veroilles and Derrière le Four. The vines average 40 to 50 years old and grow on the light clay-limestone soils of the Chambolle valley, the ground behind the village's reputation for wines of "silk and lace." Dominique took over the winemaking in 2002. Neighbours in Chambolle have called him a "vigneron to watch." The farming is practical: pheromones diffused through the vines confuse insects and stand in for pesticides. In the cellar, the grapes are fully destemmed, given a cool soak before fermentation and extracted gently, a house style built for perfume rather than power. If you want serious village Chambolle from a grower family rather than a big name, this is it.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes has a clean, precise bouquet of perfumed, floral black cherry and black currant aromas, laced with violet. The palate is very well balanced with succulent tannins, supremely well-judged acidity and a very tender, persistent finish. Very classy and highly recommended." —Neal Martin

More about Hudelot-Baillet

Tanguy Le Guen represents the seventh generation in Chambolle-Musigny, following his father Dominique's steady hand since 1998. Eight-and-a-half hectares of Côte de Nuits terroir worked with lutte raisonnée, sorted grapes, cool pre-maceration, and carefully calibrated oak depending on the cru. This is Burgundy made by people who take their inheritance seriously.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with thyme and morels, seared duck breast with cherry jus, wild mushroom risotto, coq au vin, aged Comté or Cîteaux

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Chambolle-Musigny profile: perfumed red cherry, raspberry and violet, with a hint of earthy spice from old vines. Fully destemmed and gently extracted, it typically sits medium-bodied with fine, silky tannins and fresh acidity, finishing long and elegant. Think the more fragrant, finer-boned side of red Burgundy rather than its power.
