Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is one of the most familiar wines on any shelf, which is exactly why a bottle from one of the region's few minimal-intervention, organic producers is worth seeking out. Huia (say it "HOO-yah") farms its vineyards biodynamically, with sheep and chickens roaming between the vines on free-draining, low-fertility gravel, sand and silt beside the Wairau River. Huia starts its fermentations with a pied de cuve, a native-yeast starter taken from its own vineyard, so the site itself carries into the wine. Mike and Claire Allan planted in 1994, and the estate is named for the huia, a now-extinct bird that is sacred in Māori culture as a symbol of honor, partnership and respect. Today winemaker Josh Lee, who came by way of Greywacke, Dog Point and England's Nyetimber, carries that thinking forward. Think of it as the Marlborough classic for people who care how their wine gets made, with no pretension attached.

Wine Enthusiast

92 points

"There's a lovely waxy, honey-flecked tropical and citrus fruit to start on this organic wine, with fresh basil-like herbs and something more toasty and flinty behind that. The palate shows the variety's bright, tangy acidity. It's tempered by a quietly creamy texture and fruit ripeness rather than by residual sugar, which makes a refreshing change. Food friendly and priced for every day drinking." —Christina Pickard

Tasting Profile

Expect the Marlborough hallmarks of passion fruit, grapefruit and gooseberry with fresh-cut herbs and a hint of green pepper, though native-yeast ferments typically add a rounder, more textured, savoury edge than the glossier commercial versions. Look for a dry, light-to-medium-bodied palate with lively, mouthwatering acidity and a clean, citrusy finish.
