Lefkos is the bright, easygoing way into the work of one of Crete's most compelling young growers: a crisp, light-bodied, organically farmed dry white from the mountains of Rethymno. Since 2019 Iliana Malihin, still under 30, has been reviving forgotten vineyards high in the mountain villages of Mélambes, Fourfouras and Meronas. She now works nearly half of Rethymno's remaining vineyard parcels, many of them ancient, ungrafted vines. That took real grit. In 2022 a wildfire tore through 300 acres of old, pre-phylloxera vines. In recent vintages Lefkos has blended Vidiano and Thrapsathiri, two white grapes native to the island. Her philosophy is to step back and let the place speak, and it's a pleasure to find a white this rare and this rooted that's also this easy to open on a weeknight.

Tasting Profile

Expect a crisp, light-bodied mountain white: lemon, green apple and white peach, with a hint of wild Cretan herbs and a salty, stony edge. Acidity is bright and refreshing, and the finish is dry, clean and easy (think of the zesty, salty appeal of an Albariño, with an herbal Mediterranean twist).
