This is a named-vineyard Vosne-Romanée from a family domaine small enough that most Burgundy lovers have never come across it, which is a big part of why we like it. Les Genaivrières is a village-level lieu-dit. Think of it as the way into Vosne-Romanée from a grower whose top holdings are in Échezeaux Grand Cru and the village's Premier Crus. The whole domaine is tiny: about 7 hectares across 11 appellations and roughly 24,000 bottles a year. Patrice Cacheux owns it and makes the wine himself. He took over from his father Jacques in 1994 as the fourth generation. The family were grape growers until the 1950s, when Jacques started making and bottling the estate's own wine. Patrice farms biodynamically, with no herbicides, insecticides or anti-rot treatments. In the cellar, the house approach is to destem fully, cold-soak for a week, ferment on native yeasts and bottle without fining or filtration. The result is a light, elegant Pinot Noir that tastes of a grower's hands rather than a brand.
