An accessible way into the southern Cote de Beaune from a grower far better known for Puligny: Carillon's Chassagne is fruity yet precise, racy yet balanced, and drinks young without giving up the cellar. The Carillon family has made wine in Puligny-Montrachet since 1520, when documents record a Jehan Carillon in the village, and Jacques set up on his own in 2010 with 5.5 hectares after the old family domaine was divided between brothers. The Chassagne parcel is small, 0.27 hectares planted in 2013 on the limestone hillside just south of Puligny, and it gets a lighter hand than the crus: a year in barrel with 15% new oak, then six months in stainless steel before bottling at eighteen months. 2024 was one of the hardest growing seasons in recent Burgundian memory - a wet spring, relentless downy mildew and a very small crop - but the whites that came through show the tension and classic proportion the warm years lack. Best in the three to six years after bottling.

"The 2024 Chassagne-Montrachet Village has the upper hand over the Puligny Village this year. It comes from vines planted in 2013. More depth, more vigour, more gusto on the nose. The palate is well balanced with a smooth entry, a little honeyed in texture, fine weight although it just needs a tad more mineralité on the finish. Fine." —Neal Martin
